Sutra of Forty-Two Sections

佛说四十二章经

The Sutra of Forty-Two Sections is traditionally considered the first Buddhist text translated into Chinese, presented as a gift to the court of Emperor Ming in 67 CE. It consists of forty-two brief teachings on renunciation, mindfulness, desire, and the practice of the path — a small and gentle introduction to the whole of the Buddha's teaching.

Text · 佛说四十二章经

佛言:爱欲于人,犹如执炬逆风而行,必有烧手之患。人从爱欲生忧,从忧生怖。若离于爱,何忧何怖。

Traditionally attributed to Kāśyapa Mātaṅga and Dharmaratna (1st century) · Taishō Tripiṭaka · public domain (excerpt)
